31st.
Anchored off the long talked of Bocatoro My Father dressed himself and went on shore and returned
about 1; took all our luggage into Mr. Lathams where we had some very good plantains, eggs and fish;
slept on our own bed upon the floor, bit by mosquitoes here as much as in Jamaica.
1st. April. Good Friday. Understood there is no government here or Custom house etc. etc. All my
Father heard was true as soon as we rose in the morning they brought us a cup of coffee and about
10 a.m. our breakfast: my Father called on Capt Humphries who did not receive him very well: we
amused ourselves with knocking down cocoa nuts, had our dinner about 5 p.m. had a very large pineapple
given to me.
2nd. Understood that our host Mr. Latham was going to a Mr.Shepherd who lived at
Guiana Key
now called, unsurprisingly, Shepherd's Island
an Island 12 miles off, as my Father had a letter to this person he sent it by him, my Father
and I had a bathe, but we only went up to our middle for fear of sharks, had a beautiful pine apple
and went to bed, bit as usual by mosquitoes.
3rd. Sunday. Mr. Latham returned from Guiana Key about 12 m and brought with him a
letter to my Father which was an invitation for him and I to go and spend a day or two
with him and that he would send his canoe for us.
5th. Rose about 6, went to bathe, had my breakfast about 10, they have no bread here,
but as a substitute use plantains, which I like very well.
